Here's a crocheted pot holder I finished a couple of nights ago. I didn't use a pattern, but I'm sure this same pot holder has been done by hundreds of people, hundreds of times. I chained 23, and did 13 rows of double crochets. I crocheted two pieces like this and then attached them with a single crochet around the edges, adding another row of single crochet all the way around for a border. This is nothing fancy, but was fun and quick to make.
